I was looking for two different products when I stumbled on this one. I wanted travel friendly shampoo and I was looking for something that would be gentle on my sensitive skin. This product looked interesting, and after a bit of debate (I have hard water) I ordered it. Wow. I'm glad I did. It took a few washings for me to figure out the best way to use this, but it was worth the effort. A few things I learned...do not get this product in your eyes, it stings worse than regular shampoo but washes out more easily. Don't rub the bar around on your head if you have long hair (tangles). It lathers up just fine if you just sort of run it back along your head like a comb and then work up a lather with your fingers. Dry your hair promptly after washing and you won't need conditioner or a product to blow dry with. This bar leaves my hair easy to comb, if not exactly as silky smooth as a bottled conditioner, and my hair stays clean a long time after using it. I use a tea tree shampoo intermittantly for my scalp, and that seems to take care of any residue as well. I am very happy with this product. Bonus-this bar has just a paper wrapper, minimum garbage, very green.

I used this shampoo for almost 10 years until having two kids prevented me from making the drive to buy it or taking the time to purchase on-line. For the past 3 years or so, I have used everything from cheap Suave to currently a salon shampoo, designed for curly hair like mine, which has wrecked my hair. Enough! That's it! No matter what, I am taking the time to buy J.R. Liggetts again. Chemicals in your regular shampoos seem to suck the moisture from my hair, but Liggetts always left my hair so soft and healthy. Always had compliments on my hair--the springy curls that I got without using any products. Now with all the crap I've put on my hair, it is starving for the moisturizing oils in Liggetts. I am ordering some right now and looking forward to saying goodbye to my scarecrow straw hair in about a week.If you haven't tried this yet, the bar can last a long time if you take care of it, keeping it dry. If it sits in water, it will get gooey and dissolve on you. Smells phenomenal too, like you have the squeakiest, cleanest hair possible, because you actually do! Don't let the oil ingredients in it make you fear having weighted, greasy hair. That never happened with me. Just makes it silky and happy!Update: Jan. '10--I've been using it for a few months now, and my hair is SO much better. I do have my bad hair days, but my dried-out straight straw is now soft wavy to curly hair again.

J.R. Liggett's Old-Fashioned Bar Shampoo has gained a certain following among travelers, as a bar is lightweight and, being in solid form, can be taken in carry-on luggage. The company boasts that one bar is equivalent to a large bottle of shampoo, and that claim is certainly believable. I have been traveling with a bar of this shampoo for four months now, and it's only halfway through. It is easy to build up a good lather with it, and it keeps my hair clean as shampoo is supposed to do. It is important to make sure the bar dries quickly after a shower, however, as otherwise the bar will turn into a gooey lump that might become stuck to your travel soap holder.The one reservation I have among J.R. Liggett's Old-Fashioned Shampoo is what kind of value it is. Unfortunately, it is impossible to buy in stores in most of the US, and if ordered from here, shipping charges can really bite you. If you are traveling to a destination where shampoo can be bought in tiny sachets or little bottles, the cost may be the same or less as a bar of this shampoo.
